The Long Beach Post’s 2017 Pride week guide gathered Teen Pride, a history exhibit, the Pride Run, a Pulse tribute and the 34th annual festival and parade.
Ahead of the 34th Annual Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride Parade and Festival, the Long Beach Post published its guide to Pride week 2017. Reporter Asia Morris gathered events from across the city into one place, and it reads like a portrait of a community that celebrates in many different ways.
Teen Pride returned with a Wonderland theme at Rainbow Lagoon Park, hosted by Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride, The LGBTQ Center of Long Beach and California Families in Focus. The free party for youth 13 to 19 offered dancing, a raffle, drag performances and a youth talent show.
History had its place too. The Post noted the Harvey Milk Park and Equality Plaza induction ceremony honoring Pat Crosby, Denise Penn, Paul Self and Ron Sylvester. ArtExchange, working with The Historical Society of Long Beach and the Long Beach Museum of Art, opened an exhibit of Pride memorabilia that included parade posters from years past.
The 5th Annual Long Beach Dyke March and Rally set out from the Bixby Park Band Shell, and the Shoreline Frontrunners hosted the 25th annual Pride Run, with net proceeds going to local charities.
A Festival With Headliners on Every Stage
The two-day festival will for the first time feature musical acts headlining on all five stages both nights of the event.

Chaka Khan headlined Saturday, Jody Watley and SRL closed Sunday, and the Fiesta Caliente Stage celebrated its 20th anniversary at Marina Green Park.
On Sunday morning, before the parade stepped off at 10:30 a.m., a pre-parade tribute at the grandstand honored the 49 people killed at Pulse in Orlando. The Post reported that two survivors, Pulse manager Brian Reagan and dancer and entertainer Milan D’Marco, would join the tribute. Lisa Vanderpump served as Celebrity Grand Marshal.
A pre-parade event will honor the 49 victims murdered during the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter inside Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

That week held joy and grief side by side, which is often what Pride asks of us. We are thankful to everyone who planned, marched, sang and remembered with us.
