Q Voice News introduced the honorees chosen to lead the 2018 Long Beach Pride Parade along Ocean Boulevard on May 20, 2018.

Ten days before the 2018 parade, Q Voice News introduced readers to the people and partners chosen to lead it. The May 10, 2018, story laid out who our grand marshals were and why each one mattered to Long Beach.

Queer advocates, a maritime industry, community activists, and an elected public servant are the grand marshals for the Long Beach Pride Parade.

The outlet explained how honorees are picked, a process we are proud of because it starts with our members.

Grand marshals are nominated and chosen by the Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride board and membership.

The 2018 Honorees

Transparent actress Alexandra Billings was named celebrity grand marshal. Q Voice News also profiled Jessie Haase and Debbie Lambert, a lesbian couple who founded I-Own-It.Today, a Long Beach nonprofit offering goods, services and leadership mentoring; Rev. John P. Huffman, senior minister at Unity Long Beach; and Porter Gilberg, executive director of the Long Beach LGBTQ Center.

The list continued with Kobe James, a 2017 graduate of Jordan High School and a community activist named Youth of the Year in 2017 by the Long Beach Boys and Girls Club; Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez, then serving her second term representing the First District; and the Port of Long Beach, which the outlet described as the second busiest container port in the United States.

What we love about this group is its range. A Hollywood performer rode alongside a recent high school graduate, a minister, a nonprofit leader, a couple doing grassroots work and one of the city’s biggest institutions. That mix looks a lot like Long Beach.

Q Voice News also shared the details for the day: the parade stepped off May 20, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at Ocean Boulevard and Lindero Avenue and marched west to Alamitos Avenue. The festival ran May 19 and 20 along Shoreline Drive.

Our thanks to Q Voice News for helping our community get to know the 2018 honorees before they took to Ocean Boulevard.
