The Los Angeles Blade built a 36-hour visitor guide around Long Beach Pride 2019, highlighting the parade, the block party, the Fun Zones and the city itself.

Two days before our 2019 festival opened, the Los Angeles Blade published “36 Hours in Long Beach,” a weekend guide by John Paul King for anyone heading to the shore for Pride. It noted that Long Beach Pride began in 1984 and now draws more than 80,000 people over two days, and it gave first-time visitors a clear plan for May 18 and 19, 2019, at 450 Shoreline Drive.

The Parade and the Block Party

The guide started with the parade. It reported that more than 200 marching groups and floats take part and that over 42,000 people line Ocean Boulevard to watch. It listed our 2019 grand marshals: Kate Linder, Delta Work, Megan Kerr, Karina Samala, Mario Ernesto Gonzalez, Oliver Nieto and Equality California.

Next came Sabrina La Blanc’s Block Party “Stonewall Edition,” set for 4 p.m. Sunday with Ada Vox, Sean Vaughn Carter and DJ Spark among the performers. The Blade explained the idea behind it.

A Place for Every Age

We were especially glad to see the Fun Zones get their own section. The Blade described the Family Fun Zone, open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, with face painting, crafts, games and photo ops. It also noted that 2019 was the second year for our Senior Fun Zone.

The guide added that seniors with mobility challenges would be met at the gate and escorted to the zone, a small detail that makes a big difference.

For music, the Blade pointed to Ada Vox and Big Freedia headlining, Brandon Stansell and DJ Rick on the country stage, DJ Lez Lee and the Alien Dance Band at the Dance Stage, and Pablo Montero and Diana Reyes on the Latin stage.

The piece closed by inviting visitors to explore Long Beach beyond the festival gates, from Retro Row on 4th Street and the restored Art Theatre next to The Center to the Queen Mary. We are grateful to the Los Angeles Blade for showing off our city along with our festival.
