The Press-Telegram covered our January 2020 rebrand, when Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride became Long Beach Pride and $20 early bird tickets went on sale.

It meant a lot to see our hometown paper share the news. On January 15, 2020, the Press-Telegram reported that Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride had unveiled a new name, logo, mission statement and website, and opened $20 early bird ticket sales for the 2020 festival on the same day.

The paper opened by noting that although the festival was still months away, the organization behind it was already at work.

Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride, the nonprofit that has thrown the annual bash for more than 30 years, debuted a new name, logo, mission statement and website on Wednesday, Jan. 15, the same day early bird tickets for this year’s festival became available.

The Press-Telegram reported that the organization is now known simply as Long Beach Pride, and that then-President Denise Newman said the change was sparked by the new decade.

In our announcement that day, Newman explained what the new name was meant to say:

Our name now reflects our mission of encouraging even more inclusion and embracing the LGBTQ+ community as a whole, and its allies, through the simple yet universal message of having pride in ourselves and each other.

The new mission statement commits us “to produce and support activities that educate, encourage and celebrate PRIDE, inclusion and respect for humanity.” The redesigned LongBeachPride.com launched the same morning with a limited number of $20 single-day early bird tickets.

The plan for 2020 was a three-day weekend: a free Teen Pride celebration on May 15, followed by a two-day waterfront festival on May 16 and 17, with the parade on May 17.

The name was new. The people, the shoreline and the celebration were the same ones Long Beach had known for more than 30 years.
