The Signal Tribune’s May 2024 guide covered our festival headliners, the Rhythm of the Rainbow Ball, Teen Pride, a seniors workshop, the Pride Run and the parade.

Early in May 2024, the Signal Tribune published a full guide to Long Beach Pride and the LGBTQ+ events around it. The paper set the scene for a weekend on the downtown shoreline, the 41st annual parade and a calendar of gatherings for teens, seniors and runners.

Long Beach Pride will take over the downtown shoreline this month, inviting thousands of people to celebrate love, inclusivity and this year’s theme “Rhythm and Rainbows.”

The guide named Ivy Queen, Saucy Santana and Valentina among the festival headliners, with more than 20 artists and dancers covering hip-hop, country, reggaeton and more. The festival ran May 18 and 19 at 386 Shoreline Drive.

A Ball on the Main Stage

A highlight of the story was the Rhythm of the Rainbow Ball, held on our main stage on May 18 at 6 p.m. and open to watch at no extra charge. The ball was hosted by Princess Destiny Ninja, with Torie Balmain on commentary and Sidney Perry on the decks. The Signal Tribune took time to explain where ballroom comes from.

The ballroom scene is a widely celebrated subculture created by the Black and Mexican LGBTQ community

Something for Every Generation

Teen Pride gave young people a free night of games, music, workshops, performances and resources on May 17 from 5 to 9 p.m. near the Aquarium of the Pacific, with a drop-off zone for parents on Shoreline Drive. The guide also pointed older neighbors to a free May 16 workshop from the Cal State Long Beach gerontology program on how LGBTQ+ older adults have been affected by historical barriers.

On parade morning, the 32nd annual Long Beach Pride Run sent 5K walkers and 10K racers along the shoreline at 8 a.m., with proceeds going to local nonprofits including the LGBTQ Center of Long Beach and the AIDS Food Store. The parade followed at 10 a.m. from Ocean Boulevard and Lindero Avenue to Alamitos Avenue.

We love seeing a local paper treat Pride as a whole community weekend, with something for teens, elders, runners and ballroom families alike.
