Formerly Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride, our organization introduced a new name, logo, mission statement and website ahead of the 2020 Festival and Parade.

On January 15, 2020, Long Beach Pride introduced a new name, a new logo, a new mission statement and a new website, all on the same day. For decades our organization was known as Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride. Going forward we are simply Long Beach Pride, a name that welcomes the whole LGBTQ+ community and the allies who stand with us.

The mission behind the name is short and clear. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit works “to produce and support activities that educate, encourage and celebrate PRIDE, inclusion and respect for humanity.”

The start of a decade is the perfect time to reflect on Long Beach Pride’s strong history and our commitment to inform and inspire a new generation of active members. Our name now reflects our mission of encouraging even more inclusion and embracing the LGBTQ+ community as a whole, and its allies, through the simple yet universal message of having pride in ourselves and each other.

Denise Newman, President of Long Beach Pride

“As one of the first events kicking off the 2020 Pride season, we are excited to throw our biggest celebration ever while welcoming attendees from all over to our great city of Long Beach,” Newman added.

Honoring Where We Started

A new name doesn’t erase an old story. Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride, Inc. began when founders Judi Doyle, Marilyn Barlow and Robert Crow met at the Executive Suite for the organization’s first meeting. The first festival and parade drew 5,000 people to a two-day celebration at Palm Island. Our parade honors still carry the founders’ names, and their work is the reason there is anything to rename.

This is also not the first time we have refreshed how we present ourselves. In 2009, the organization introduced new uniforms, a new mission statement and a new corporate logo. The 2020 update goes further, putting inclusion right in the name.

Three Days in May

The 37th Annual Long Beach Pride Festival & Parade opens on May 15, 2020, with a free Teen Pride celebration: a DJ, dancing and performances in a safe, chaperoned space just for young people. The waterfront festival follows on May 16 and 17 with live music, community programming, and food from local eateries. The parade steps off on May 17.

To give festivalgoers a bigger experience, we are working with event production company JJ|LA, which produces Los Angeles Pride and produced the two-day Pride Island music festival, headlined by Madonna, at WorldPride NYC 2019.

The redesigned LongBeachPride.com launched alongside the new name with a limited number of early bird single-day tickets at $20. Headliners are still under wraps, and we’ll share them in the coming weeks.

About Long Beach Pride

Long Beach Pride, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is an all-volunteer organization that produces the annual three-day Long Beach Pride festival, parade and Teen Pride each May. As the third-largest Pride festival and parade in California, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community with a focus on inclusion and work to show the wider community that diversity builds a stronger, healthier society. Taking pride in what we have achieved since 1984, we strive to teach future generations that the work for acceptance continues.
